Honoring Motherhood

God could not be everywhere and therefore he created mothers. ~Jewish Proverb

Who ran to help me when I fell,
And would some pretty story tell,
Or kiss the place to make it well?
My mother. ~Ann Taylor

Mother’s Day is a wonderful holiday widely celebrated around the world that’s meant to honor mothers and motherhood. It is an official day set aside to celebrate the wisdom, beauty, and unconditional love of every mother by lavishing them with attention, love, and Mother's Day gifts.

Holiday History

Celebrating the importance of motherhood is a tradition that goes back to ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman civilizations. The earliest history of Mother’s Day dates back to the annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to their maternal goddesses. Ancient Romans, too, celebrated a spring festival called Hilaria dedicated to Cybele, a mother goddess. The modern observance of Mother’s Day started in England, where in the 17th century people began celebrating Mothering Sunday on the 4th Sunday of Lent. On this day, Mothers were treated as guests of honor and were presented with wildflowers and sweet treats.

In the US, though inspired by Mothering Sunday in England, the holiday never gained its momentum until an activist and social worker Anna Jarvis began the crusade to establish a memorial day to honor the role of women and mothers. In 1907, she handed out 500 white carnations (her mother's favorite flower) to all the women in her church’s congregation on the anniversary of her mother’s passing. A year later, the very first Mother’s Day was celebrated at St. Andrew’s Methodist Episcopal Church in West Virginia, on May 10th 1908. Shortly after, the tradition spread all over the US and Canada, and the celebration has spread around the world. However, not all countries celebrate it on the same day. The most widely celebrated date of Mother’s Day is the second Sunday of May, which is observed by 65 nations, including: the US, Canada, Australia, China, Brazil, Japan, Columbia, Turkey, South Africa, Barbados, Greece, Switzerland, and many others.

Mother's

Mother's Day is the next big holiday after Christmas and Valentine's Day. Children all around the world take this day as an opportunity to express love and gratitude to their mothers, grandmothers, or other mother figures in their lives.

Holiday Classics

The tradition of giving flowers and other appropriate gifts for women is quite popular on Mother's Day. As a mark of respect, children also pamper their moms with breakfast in bed. A handmade card and a bouquet of spring flowers usually accompany the meticulously laid breakfast. Red carnations are the symbol and most widely ordered flowers of the holiday.

Since Mother's Day is observed as a holiday in a lot of countries, many families take the opportunity to spend the whole day together. Some families choose to soak of the beautiful weather and go out for a picnic and outdoors fun. Other families prefer taking their mom out for a festive dinner, so restaurants are seeing more business than ever on this day. Since this is the case, if you’re planning on taking your mother out to her favorite restaurant, you might want to make your reservations early!

Whatever you’d like to do, make sure to celebrate this Mother's Day as never before! Demonstrate your love to all the women who have nurtured, encouraged, and challenged you over the years. Was there a teacher who helped you discover what you are truly passionate about? A woman in your church who gave you spiritual guidance you sought? An aunt, grandma, sister, mentor, or employer who played a vital role in your maturation? This is their day too! Use your imagination and creativity, think from your heart, and celebrate Mother's Day with the most important women in your life!

Where is Mother’s Day celebrated?

Mother’s Day has become a holiday that’s celebrated all around the world, although some countries celebrate it on different days.

Many countries in Eastern Europe - such as Russia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Serbia, and others - celebrate Mother's Day every year on March 8.
